Anish Giri (born June 28, 1994)[1] is a chess prodigy. He met his final grandmaster norm at the age of 14 years, 7 months and 2 days when he beat Venezuelan GM Eduardo Iturrizaga in the C Group of the 2009 Corus Chess Tournament in Wijk aan Zee in the Netherlands.[2]

Family
Anish is the son of a Nepalese father (Sanjay Giri),[2] and a Russian mother (Olga Giri).[3] Anish was born in St. Petersburg, Russia on 28 June 1994.[1] In 2002, he moved to Japan with his parents. Since then he had been residing in Japan, and visiting St. Petersburg regularly. Since February 2008, Anish and his family have been living in the Netherlands, in the Dutch city of Rijswijk where his father is working in a research and consulting foundation (Deltares). He has two sisters, Natasha and Ayusha.
Chess career
Anish's first club was a local youth sport club 'DYUSH-2' in St. Petersburg, Russia. His trainers in this club were Asya Kovalyova and Andrei Praslov. He was a member of the Japan Chess Association and the Sapporo Chess Club during his stay in Japan. He became Russian champion (U12) while he was living in Yugoslavia.
Anish has been playing for SK Turm Emsdetten since 2008 in the German Chess Bundesliga (the premier league of team chess in Germany). He is the youngest ever player in the history of this league. Furthermore, he is affiliated with several Dutch chess clubs, including the HSG (Hilversum Chess Society) and the Delftsche SchaakClub (Delft Chess Club). He plays in the French league (TOP-16) for l'Echiquier Châlonnais.
He does not have intensive chess training facilities, mostly working by himself using chess programs and books at his leisure. Now the KNSB (Dutch Chess Federation) is providing him facilities for some training sessions with Federation coach Vladimir Chuchelov.
Major events and achievements
In September 2009 he won at Haaksbergen the closed Dutch Championship, making him the youngest player to win this championship to date.
In January 2010, aged 15, he competed in the Corus Chess Tournament in Wijk aan Zee winning the B-group.[3]
In May 2010 it was revealed that Giri had aided Viswanathan Anand in preparation for the World Chess Championship 2010 against challenger Veselin Topalov. Anand won the match 6.5-5.5 to retain the title.[4][5]
At the end of May 2010, Giri convincingly won the 18th annual Sigeman & Co. Tournament with a performance rating of 2936.[6]
In August 2010, he was one of the best scorers for the Rising Stars team during the NH tournament against the Experienced team, but was unable to qualify for the Amber tournament, losing in tiebreak against Nakamura.[7]
In October 2010, Giri won bronze at the 2010 Chess Olympiad at Khanty-Mansiysk, during his first Olympiad appearance. Giri had a performance rating of 2730, playing board 4 for the Dutch team.
In January 2011, Giri beat world number one Magnus Carlsen (Elo 2814) with Black in 22 moves at the Wijk Aan Zee chess tournament (category 20).
In January 2012, Giri won the 54th annual Reggio Emilia chess tournament. Despite being the lowest rated player in a category 20 tournament (average rating 2744), Giri scored four wins, two losses and four draws for a clear first place (performance rating of 2823).
Schooling
Giri is currently studying at the Grotius College in Delft. Unlike most other prodigies, he is a regular high school student following classes every day, save for some limited absences allowed by the school during major tournaments and events. Thus, playing chess is still a part-time activity for Giri. His favorite subjects include physics, mathematics, geography and history.
Other interests and skills
Giri speaks Russian, English, Dutch, Japanese and a little bit of Nepalese. In school, he studies German as well. He likes to play football and table tennis.
Recently[when?] Giri contracted a new interest—writing articles and annotating top games. He annotated a number of top games for the popular chess site ChessBase,[8] and has written several articles, including analyses of his own games for chess magazines, such as New in Chess, 64 (chess magazine), and Schach Magazin 64. Since May 2011 he is a columnist for the magazine ChessVibes Training.

on the story and she shared, “Yes,

The Gulbarg Society massacre took place on February 28, 2002, during the 2002 Gujarat riots, when a Hindu mob attacked the Gulbarg Society, a Muslim neighbourhood in Chamanpura, Ahmedabad. Most of the houses were burnt, and at least 35 victims including a former Congress Member of Parliament Ehsan Jafri, were burnt alive, while 31 others went missing after the incident, later presumed dead, bringing the total deaths to 69.[1][2][3][4][5]
In response to the complaint filed by Zakia Jaffri, widow of Ehsan Jafri, the Supreme Court of India on April 27, 2009, appointed a Special Investigation Team (SIT), headed by RK Raghavan, a former head of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the case. It reopened nine crucial riot cases. Seven years after the incident, in February 2009, Erda, the Deputy Superintendent of Police with the Gujarat Police at the time was arrested on charges of dereliction of duty and for tampering of evidence, as some survivors alleged that he not only allowed the killings to happen but also helped rioters to burn the dead bodies.[6] The SIT finally submitted its report on May 14, 2010 to the apex court registry of the Supreme Court.[2][7]
The Society with most of house damaged or burnt was later abandoned, of the 18 houses which were burnt, only one has been repaired, though none of the families returned, though some of them congregate, each year on the anniversary of the event and offer prayers.[8][9]

Just a day after the 2002 Gujarat riots erupted, at 9 am on February 28, 2002, a frenzied mob started gathering outside the Gulbarg Society, a cluster of 29 bungalows and 10 apartment buildings housing upper middle class business families mostly belonging to Muslim community, in Ahmedabad city’s Hindu-dominated Chamanpura area, and began shouting slogans. Many of residents took refuge in the home of a former Congress MP in his 70s, Ehsan Jafri, who according to eye witnesses kept on frantically calling police and political set-up for help, in vain. By noon, the mob turned violent, it breached the boundary wall and started torching houses, and attacking residents, and in the next six hours 69 were dead, including Ehasan Jafri, who was hacked to death and later burnt, at least 35 other victims were also either hacked to death or burnt alive, while at least 85 others were injured.[1][5][10][11][12]
Aftermath[edit]
National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) under JS Verma, said in June 2002, that it was "deeply disturbed by recent press reports stating that the chargesheets filed thus far in respect of the Gulbarg Society and Naroda Patiya incidents lack credibility in as much as they are reported to depict the victims of violence as the provocateurs." [13] NHRC had previously recommended that cases like Best Bakery case, Gulbarg Society case, the Naroda Patia incident and the Sardarpura case in Mehsana district be handed over to CBI.[14]
The Supreme Court, on March 26, 2008, ordered the Narendra Modi government to re-investigate 10 cases in the 2002 Gujarat riots, including the Godhra train burning and subsequent Godhra riots where 81 people were killed, Gulbarg Society where 68 were killed, Naroda Patia where over 100 were killed, Sardarpur where 34 were killed and Best Bakery case where 14 people were burnt alive.[15] Zakiya Jafri, wife of Ehsan Jafri, who was burnt alive on the day, first made the complaint on June 8, 2006 alleging that the police had not registered the FIRs against Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, and 62 others including several ministers and alleging a conspiracy to allow the massacre of Muslims, which involved instructing policemen and bureaucrats not to respond to pleas for help from Muslims being attacked during the riots. The complaint included VHP leaders Praveen Togadia and Jaideep Patel, DGP of the state PC Pande for abetting the riots. She then approached the Gujarat High Court with her complaint, which on November 3, 2007, refused to entertain her plea, and instead asked her to present the case before magistrate’s court. Subsequently, she approached the Supreme Court of India, which on April 27, 2009 appointed a five-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by R K Raghavan, a former head of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), to investigate into these cases, and asked the SIT to look into her complaint of alleged collusion of the state machinery and the rioters over the two days of Gujarat riots.[16]
In March 2009, Indian National Congress leader Meghsingh Chaudhary at the instance of Special Investigative Team (SIT) was arrested for active participation in the Gulbarg Society massacre.[17] It alleged that he was a part of the armed mob, egging them on to kill the Muslims, along with others.[18] Then in March 2010, it summoned Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi to give an explanation regarding accusations against him in the murder of former Congress MP Ehsaan Jaffri, who was burnt alive, along with nearly 70 other people in the Gulbarg Society. He appeared before the SIT on Mar 27, 2010. Earlier, R B Sreekumar, who was Additional DG Intelligence at the time, deposed before a commission that ministers and police were "deliberately inactive during the riots" and two eye-witnesses Roopa Modi and Imtiyaz Pathan testified against Modi in the trial court. Imtiaz who lost six members of his family during the massacre, was the one to give the first eyewitness account in the trial which started in September 2009, after being held up for 7 years. He told the court that when a mob started gathering outside Gulbarg Society on February 28, MP Jafri called Chief Minister Narendra Modi for help, yet the police refused to come for help. He identified 20 of the 100 accused, arrested in the case.[10][19][20] In all, the eyewitness who appeared before the SIT in December 2009, namely, Imtiyaz Pathan, Saeedkhan Pathan, Roopa Mody, Saira Sandhi and Rafiq Pathan named joint commissioner of police MK Tandon and Meghaninagar police inspector ND Parmar, Manish Patel alias Splendor, Mahendra Pukhraj, Jagroopsinh Rajput, Inio Harijan, Babu Marwadi and Rajesh Jinger, a constable residing in the same area, as accused.[21]
In March 2010, Gulbarg Society case trial was stayed by the Supreme Court after the special public prosecutor R K Shah resigned after accusing the trial judge and SIT of being "soft on the accused". He alleged that, "..The SIT officers are unsympathetic towards witnesses, they try to browbeat them and don’t share evidence with the prosecution as they are supposed to do." [22] Later, activist Teesta Setalvad in an affidavit filed before the Supreme court on April 24, 2010, showed the phone record analysis which indicated that "Ahmedabad police commissioner P C Pande had spoken to joint commissioner of police M K Tandon six times during the period when the latter was present at Gulbarg Society and the mob was growing restive. Though Tandon was accompanied by “striking force” equipped to disperse a riotous mob, he left Gulbarg Society without taking any corrective action and his departure led to the massacre in which 69 persons, including former Congress MP and Zakia's husband Ehsan Jafri, were massacred".[23]
On May 14, 2010, the Special Investigative Team (SIT) finally submitted its report to the registry in a sealed cover as directed by the apex court bench of Justice D K Jain, Justice P Sathasivam and Justice Aftab Alam. Prior to this, the SIT team had requested for more time as it wanted to question VHP International president, Praveen Togadia, which it did on May 11, 2010.[2][7]
In its closure report filed in the Zakia Jafri case, the R.K. Raghavan-led Special Investigation Team which was appointed by Supreme Court of India submitted that Jafri was killed because he provoked a “violent mob” that had assembled “to take revenge of Godhra incident from the Muslims.” It further submitted that Jafri fired at the mob and “the provoked mob stormed the society and set it on fire.”[24] [25] [26]
On December 15, 2010, Zakia Jafri and others victims filed an application with the Supreme Court, requesting it to direct SIT to submit the report before the Ahmedabad court as ordered by the SC, within 30 days.[27] Thereafter on February 8, 2012, SIT submitted its final report to a Gujarat magistrate's court, which after evaluating it would decided whether further investigation is required or not.[28]
Sting operation[edit]
In October 2007, the Aaj Tak New Channel showed footage of a sting operation carried out by Tehelka magazine, wherein 14 VHP or Bajrang Dal activists, including, Madan Chawal, a Gulbarg Society massacre accused, and a Bharatiya Janata Party MLA from Godhra, Haresh Bhatt who was national vice-president of Bajrang Dal during the riots, were shown talking about the execution of the killings .[29][30] The investigative journalists' reports were finally published in the November 3, 2007 issue of Tehelka as The Truth: Gujarat 2002 – Tehelka report.
Allegations against Narendra Modi and clean chit[edit]
However in April 2012, a Special Investigation Team found that Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi had absolutely no role in the killing of Ehsan Jafri[31] Later a protest petition was filed by his wife Zakia Jafri seeking rejection of the said SIT report and Supreme Court accepted the same and the case is under process of being heard.[32] [33] [34] SIT has strongly opposed this petition[35] and said that "Modi has never said that go and kill people".[36] Later Court through Gujarat High Court stayed the routine transfer of the metropolitan magistrate hearing the petition on the information of the amicus curiae Harish Salve that the routine transfer due to the end of his term may delay the case.[37] [38] In 2004, in an interview with Hardnews, Former Chief Justice of India V N Khare alleged that massacre could not have taken place without the complicity of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi. Khare has said that in his opinion Narendra Modi should be criminally prosecuted for genocide and manslaughter for the Gulbarga Society Massacre. [39] Reacting to this observation, Modi did not make any statement but said that he could not distinguish between khare (just) and khote (unjust). He said that Khare was no longer holding the high office and his statement should be seen in this light.[40]

Rahul Dholakia directed, Parzania (2005), starring Naseeruddin Shah and Sarika as the Parsi couple, Rupa and Dara Mody of the Gulbarg Society, whose 10-year old son Azhar Mody went missing after a mob attack.[41][42] Subsequently, at the 2006 National Film Awards the film won two awards, the National Film Award for Best Actress for Sarika, as well as award for National Film Award for Best Direction. The film was not released in Gujarat, as the cinema owners refused to screen it fearing backlash.[43][44][45][46]

Television and films will give you name and fame, but sometimes, it will also introduce you to a perilous side. Well, we are talking about fanatic fans, who at times cross limits and create troubles for their favourite stars.
Beautiful and talented Kratika Sengar (Zee TV’s Punar Vivah season 1), recently faced a similar experience.
A few days back we saw a tweet by Kratika which read, “I ve no clue about deepika malhotra's existence.”
Wondering what it meant, we got to work and soon found out that apparently Kratika was referring to an obsessive fan of hers. Our source says that apparently the fan, named Deepika Malhotra, is claiming on social media that she is Kratika’s cousin and even went on to abuse the actress.
We called up Kratika to learn more on the story and she shared, “Yes, a certain fan is spreading false news about me. Hence I made it a point to clear the air in the above tweet. I also wish to inform my fans that I am not on Facebook, but only on Twitter.”
Another khabru added more spice to the matter by saying that Deepika is really a big fan of Gurmeet Choudhary (Kratika’s co star in Punar Vivah season 1) and she gets jealous when Gurmeet romances actresses on screen. Apparently, she is the same fan who went on to talk negative about Drashti Dhami too (Gurmeet and Drashti worked in Star One’s Geet).
