Andhra Pradesh to give more space to male nurses
HYDERABAD: For decades, nursing has remained a profession reserved for women in India, especially in Andhra Pradesh where men are still strictly banned from the corridors of dozens of government hospitals. But the taboo on males seems to be changing as the government, in a major policy shift, has agreed to admission of men in MSc Nursing course from this year, which was otherwise reserved for women.
Buoyed at the recent development, the department of nursing studies has written to the government to permit male nurses in state-run hospitals too, officials said. "We have written to the state government to have a relook into the norm that bans recruitment of male nurses in government hospitals," said Rafath Razia, deputy director (Nursing).
Interestingly, Andhra Pradesh is among the few states that kept men away from the profession. Kerala has introduced male nurses along with Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan and some northern states which have male nurses in state-run hospitals.
Male nurses were not preferred because women were traditionally seen as care givers. Moreover objections from women patients after stray incidents of molestation in some private hospitals made the government wary. But with male nurses performing well in the private sector, the perception gradually changed across India.
In 2007, AP took the first step towards allowing male nurses in the 'forbidden zone' after the government allowed them entry into BSc nursing and general nursing diploma courses. Now, the state appears to be narrowing down the steep gender gap in the profession further. The two-year MSc course will be run under the aegis of NTR University of Health Sciences under whose supervision nursing colleges are run.
Officials of the AP Private Hospitals and Nursing Homes Association welcomed the move, with its president R S Saluja saying that the number of males nurses have increased 10-fold in the corporate sector in the last decade. "The trend has changed. Men are entering this field and are comfortable too. Given a choice, we will prefer a male nurse now since we have more female nurses," said Saluja, adding that the male-female ratio is currently pegged at 10:90 in favour of women.
Experts said that nursing today is not just restricted to patient care as there are nursing planners, administrators and faculty. "We take male nurses especially in the operation theatres where patients need to be shifted from one table to another," said Dr M Veera Prasad, executive director, Prime Hospitals. Dr A Lingaiah, director, medical services, Yashoda Hospital, also said that male nurses are being increasingly preferred in the emergency services, intensive care units as well as operation theatres, as they are known to cope better with very high stress levels.

Beera says the decision to start the wedding party from the house was taken last night so the preparations would begin now. Beera tells Megha, Jiji and Renu that the wedding party would arrive with glitz and glamour. Megha, Jiji and Renu get convinced and leave.
Mohan comes to meet Navi and tells her that he has a surprise gift for her. Mohan asks Navi to close her eyes. Navi closes her eyes and Mohan gifts her a bell Mohan says he didn't know what to give. Navi says it is the best gift ever. Navi is in tears. Mohan says who cries while accepting a gift and Navi says who cries while giving a gift. Mohan says this might be a small bell but you can ring it from anywhere and your Spiderman will come running. Navi says she knows. Mohan asks her if she is scared. Navi nods. Mohan says it happens when you love someone deeply the thought of losing them is scary. Mohan asks her to trust her love. Megha watching all this from the door. Navi shows the bell to Megha.
Someone is throwing water on Beera and Dada asks the man to keep pouring water until the color of turmeric comes off. Dada tells Beera that he is scared whether the color on him is that of the turmeric or of the love of Vyas family. Ragini asks Dada as to what is wrong in what happen as it is a custom to do so as the wedding is that very evening. Dada tells Ragini that Beera would never marry a girl who insulted him. Mohan is getting Addu ready. Addu has flashes of Beera hugging Dada. Addu keeps repeating "Ijoo, Ijoo". Mohan tells him that Ijoo would come in the evening. Mohan leaves to get Addu's shoes. Addu draws Beera's picture and crosses it out. Suddenly a gust of wind comes and paper falls down. Mohan comes and takes Addu away. Addu tries to point towards the drawing but Mohan tells him to leave it and that they'd check it out later.
Munna gets a call from Ragini. Munna asks her how the wedding preparations are going on. Ragini tells him that there are no preparations as there would be no wedding. Ragini tells Munna that it was all a plan to deceive and take revenge. Munna tells Ragini that Dada is manipulating Beera as the latter has handed all threads of his life to the former. Munna tells Ragini to make Beera understand and bring him to the venue. Munna says he will see how this wedding does not happen. Ragini says Dada and Beera would never listen to her. Munna tells her that she too is a woman and asks her to think how would Navi feel when Beera doesn't turn up. Munna tells her to do anything and to make sure Beera reaches on time. Munna says this is Beera's last chance to lead a happy and decent life. Munna tells her that he trusts her and will see her at the wedding.
Megha is dressing Navi up. Navi is all decked up in her wedding finery.
Mohan comes and meets Papaji & Mummyji. Papaji & Mummyji are happy to see him. Papaji says now all of Megha's problems are solved as he is back. Papji says even Addu is back. MM look uncomfortable.
Renu comes and complains that it is too hot and that her makeup is melting Renu scolds Mohan for being stingy and not turning the air conditioner on Renu asks him if he had no budget for AC Papaji asks Mohan to at least turn on an air cooler for Renu Mohan says the AC is turned on and that it is not affecting Renu due to all the fat Renu asks Megha to warn Mohan not argue with her.
Papaji asks Megha what time was the wedding party supposed to have arrived. Megha says 7.
Aarti teasing Navi about Beera . Aarti sends an sms to Beera using Navi's phone.
Renu asks Tanu if he saw the wedding party. Tanu says no. Renu asks Tanu to go the terrace and keep an eye on the wedding party Mohan hears this and says he will go check. Megha is worried and thinks to herself that she didn't tell Mohan as to what happened at Beera's house and how unprepared they were.
Aarti tells Navi that Beera hasn't replied. Navi thinks that Beera didn't pick up her call when she tried calling him in the afternoon. Navi wonders if Dada is putting pressure on Beera. Navi thinks that she won't mistrust Beera again. Mohan comes there and asks what happened and why they look so serious. Aarti tells him that Beera is not picking up the phone. Mohan tries to call Beera and looks at Navi.
Precap: Megha tells Mohan that Karan passed through Beera's house and he saw no wedding party going through. Mohan is worried. Mohan calls Ragini asks her where the wedding party has reached. Ragini stutters and is about to say something when Dada comes there and snatches the phone away and disconnects the call. Mohan and Megha are worried.
