BREAKING NEWS | Assaf: I am a son of the camp..

GAZA CITY -- Mohammad Assaf declared himself a "son of the camp" on Tuesday as he returned to the Gaza Strip, where thousands of jubilant fans awaited the arrival of the Arab Idol star.

Flag-waving crowds waited for several hours at the Rafah crossing on Egypt's border for 23-year-old Assaf, three days after he was crowned the winner of the popular regional singing contest.

Assaf bent over and kissed the ground as he crossed the border, an AFP correspondent reported, before holding a news conference alongside Hamas officials.

"I thank you for your wonderful welcome and hope the celebrations won't feature gunfire," Assaf said, alluding to the shots in the air that sometimes accompany celebrations in the Middle East.

Assaf said he was the son of Palestine and "son of the (refugee) camp," and told reporters he would continue to sing nationalistic songs and raise the Palestinian flag.

"We want our freedom," he added. "I hope I have united the two parts of our country through my participation and I wish the media would concentrate on the Palestinian people."

Recordings of Assaf's songs blasted out from loudspeakers as crowds thronged his motorcade as it made its way up the Gaza Strip.

Assaf was forced to head to a hotel as he could not reach his home in Khan Younis refugee camp, where thousands of fans flooded the streets holding posters of the Arab Idol and waving banners congratulating the home-grown star.

Immediately after his win on Saturday night, tens of thousands of Palestinians took the streets for spontaneous celebrations in the West Bank, Gaza and Lebanon.

Palestine University will award Assaf an honorary BA in media during a graduation ceremony on Wednesday, Ma'an has learned.

Assaf was named Youth Ambassador for UNRWA, the UN's agency for Palestinian refugees and named Palestinian goodwill ambassador by President Mahmoud Abbas.

Assaf left Gaza via the Rafah crossing for an audition in Egypt in October last year, and made it through each stage, eventually staying in Beirut alongside other contestants for the final rounds.

Assaf's victory in the finals, held in the Lebanese capital and screened live on television across the Arab world, marked the first such success for a Palestinian entertainer.

"Mohammed Assaf is the Arab Idol!" declared on Saturday the presenter of the show which is modeled on the British hit show Pop Idol, as confetti rained down on the cheering audience.

The handsome, tuxedo-clad singer immediately dedicated his win to "the Palestinian people, who have been suffering for more than 60 years from (the Israeli) occupation".

He won a professional recording contract and a car, a 2013 Chevrolet Camaro.

Swimming yesterday
in a hotel pool miles in the air,
Lake Michigan two blocks beyond
the floor to ceiling windows
and without visible shore,
children ran the pavement,
and mothers shushed their shrill laughter.
A man listened to news radio
while slapping a paper open and shut,
his naked calves thick like stalked melons.
I went under.
The cacophony of the pool room
replaced with that of my own.
My heart beating, stomach turning,
a melody hummed to myself.
I could hear the blood running,
like the tires this afternoon over Iowa.
Hands in my passenger seat lap,
I thought of what it must sound like within:
the different songs of digestion, cancer,
infection, worry, ideation, love.

We passed a farmhouse an acre from the interstate,
paint peeling and a porch tipped to the west,
a mailbox opened to the weather’s postal service.
Four silos stood up, I assume empty.
Kachinas of wind, their skirts spinning and glorious.
Each metal dome reflected the spring sun,
multiplying the star four brilliant times.
That is enough.
To be reflective is enough.
I know it.
No matter full, without or with worry,
it is enough to reflect.
To be the surface of water, the cornea of the eye,
the window over a lake, the drum of an ear,
the roof of an empty silo, the heart impressed upon.

-Fluent in Spanish and English, currently learning Japanese (Verbal and written experience included...) -Video game champion for 19 years: exceptional coordination -Can do several impersonations/voices/accents quite well (Donald Duck; Nolan's Batman, Bane, and Joker characters; several different nerds; perfect "robot" voice and movements; Gimli and Gandalf from Lord of the Rings; Peter Griffin from Family Guy; Spiderman's web-slinging and web thrust effects-can do them with "perfect precision"; Liam Neeson's impersonated characters... I can generally imitate a variety of stereotypes and personalities accurately well; can usually listen to a sound or voice, and instantly repeat it with "near perfect or perfect accuracy"). -Good with quick numbers -Crossing eyes in one direction and rolling them back to "show the whites"; 'zombified' look very realistic -Twirling pens, pencils, balls around in hand in different directions very quickly: 360 degrees, 180, even backwards flips and quick rotations....(Sounds cooler and more professional when actually seen)

-High school drama team (Junior year), voice lessons (Junior year, last semester), choir (Senior year, first semester) -Monkey Butler Comedy Colorado-Improv. weekly workshops summer 2012 -AMTC Direct Denver workshops/photo shoots and dress rehearsals (July 2012-August 2012) -Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Powerpoint, Publisher, Photoshop, Repair and Mechanic PC programs... -JV/Varsity Basketball and soccer (3 years), Krav Maga (4 years), Karate/Kung Fu (17 years), Taekwondo (4+years) -Lifetime involvement on and off in swimming, tennis, running, hiking, climbing, baseball, skateboarding, spelunking, biking, skating (overall outdoorsmanship and outdoor leadership classes taken as well)

I've recorded a few voiced podcasts/blogs/audio logs with myself and friends just for 'the heck of it'....sometimes with imaginary characters involved, but mainly with myself as narrator or myself impersonating Donald Duck's voice. I've also hosted and explained a few science, public speaking, and history projects at school fairs/events from middle school through my university days. I've written and directed plenty of scripts/scenes for homemade/YouTube videos which I have unfortunately discarded with time. I've been on stage before small and large audiences respectively, and have led/hosted political, inspirational, educational, and leadership presentations in my school community and in the community of Globeville. This has given me much speaking/performing/teaching/acting/improvizational experience with random and diversified groups of people. I've taught Whiz Kids and been in a few focus group studies/surveys, having the desire and drive to teach, inform, and inspire mass audiences through the lens of a camera.

I've always role-played in the mirror since age five or earlier, and still do so even today. I try to stop myself and 'get serious', but I usually can't stop this passion within me. I've been repeatedly told by different family members that I've had an exceptional memory (which I still retain) for remembering, recalling, and quoting...and especially for movies and commercials...since the age of three. So I suppose that means something...chance, or fate?

Anuj Vignesh is proud to announce that he has finally secured the services of Whatsapp on a one-year contract after both parties finally put pen to paper after years and years of painstaking negotiations.

The deal (rumored to be for an undisclosed fee of Rs 0 ) will finally see Mr. Vignesh make the step up from the prehistoric age of text messaging, to the more technologically advanced terrains of What'sapp and Viber where most of his colleagues and friends already operate.

"It's a dream come true for me. Growing up in the wondrous city of Boston, Massachusetts as a kid, I often dreamed of staying connected to my near and dear ones just by a touch of the button," Mr. Vignesh said at a specially arranged press conference near his residence (even though he is technically homeless) in Bangalore, Karnataka.

"Whatsapp is the greatest application in the world, and I every time I make use of this facility, I shall do my very best to ensure that I treat it with the love and respect it deserves!" he said.

The 21-year-old Bostonian, though saddened at the thought of leaving his former phone for newer and more advanced technology, said that he is looking forward to what lies ahead.

"It was no doubt a very difficult decision for me. There is a little boy inside me that tells me what to do whenever I am at a crossroads. And this time, the little boy inside me was screaming 'WHATSAAAAP', " Vignesh said.

Anuj, who many feel shares an uncanny resemblance with Ultimate Star Thala Ajith Kumar, also expressed his gratitude to his former employers and co-workers.

"I have the utmost respect to my Samsung Galaxy Wave, which stood by me during all times, happy and sad.

"Over the last few years, I have dropped my phone everywhere, from terraces and buildings, to urinals and potholes. But she still stood beside me. As a sign of respect, if I do throw someone else's Samsung Galaxy phone away, I won't celebrate," he said.

The handsome BVMite, touted by many as the Indian Hank Moody, was equally as optimistic about his romantic prospects.

"For years, the lack of whatsapp has hindered me socially and professionally. Girls never liked me only because I never had whatsapp, and not at all because I am a creepy, stalker who cracks awful jokes. Which I am actually not. Nope. Not at all," Mr. Vignesh said.

Meanwhile, the news was met with utmost joy and jubilation among the female population.

Sreyashi Dey, former ACJite, couldn't control her excitement upon hearing the news.

"K," she said with utmost disgust on her face.

Harshini Reddy, another friend of Mr. Vignesh, was however more enthusiastic about the deal.

"Everyone knows about my feelings for Mr. Vignesh, who as you all know, looks a LOT like Thala Ajith. When I first saw him, I thought I had accidentally stumbled onto the sets of the film "Aasai".

"Pachaiya sollanumna, Anuj vandhu Aasai Ajith, and ennakku vandhu Ajith Aasai <3 <3," she said in a televised interview.

Responding to a question from a journalist who asked if Mr. Vignesh and Miss. Reddy were romantically involved, the Bostonian lost his cool.

"That's the problem with you people. Always looking for something that isn't there, just to sell a few extra copies.

"I am completely professional with all my friends and colleagues- Abinaya, Poorvaja, Tanvi, Kavya etc, and not just Miss. Reddy. I could never do that to my agent Sudarshan, without whose help I would have never gotten the services of Whatsapp," Anuj retorted angrily.

"I have been, am, and will always be in a committed relationship with the only two girls I truly love- Sharon and Emma!"

"No doubt this is a historic day. Let us all take a step forward. Together"

Mr. Vignesh left his seat and retreated into his home. Off to finally begin a new innings. One that promises much excitement, and more drama.

This show is directed by first time director, Mike Frye-Henderson with assistance from Mike Glair. Based on the 1987 romantic , comedy, adventure film, based on William Goldman's novel of the same name, The Princess Bride is staged as a book read by a grandfather to his ill grandson. The grandgather assures a romance-weary boy that the book has much more to deliver than a simpering love story, including but not limited to fencing, fighting, torture, death, true love, giants and pirates. Indeed, The Princess Bride offers a tongue in cheek fairy tale depicting a stable boy turned pirate's journey to rescue Buttercup, his true love, away from the evil prince, whom she had agreed to marry 5 years after learning of what she had believed to be news of Westley's death. With help from Prince Humberdinck's disgruntled former employee, Miracle Max, swordsman Indio Montoya and a very large man named Fezzik, the star-crossed lovers are reunited.
AUDITIONS ARE HELD FROM 6 - 10PM on both the 26th & 27th.
Performance dates are October 11, 12, 13 18, 19 and 20th

Blame greed, not God, for calamity in hills

24 June 2013

swami sunirmalananda

Swami Nigamananda Saraswati died on 13 June 2011, having fasted for 115 days to save Mother Ganga from illegal mining. That was his third fast. Earlier, he had fasted twice for more than two months each for the same cause. How many remember him? Who knows if we ever understood the significance of this sacrifice for such a noble cause ~ saving Mother Ganga. While hundreds of glorious stars are being rained annually with awards, citations, prizes, cash, and huge media coverage, among other things, the poor monk who died in his attempt to save the Ganga is forgotten. Having begun his fast on 13 February 2011, he passed away in a hospital in June.

Now, a year after, we have the floods in northern India. At the time of writing, the death toll is still unclear. The extent of the tragedy is horrifying. The tearful tales of survivors are shocking. Soon, this news too will be drowned under truck loads of projects, tenders, millions of crores sanctioned for constructions and ribbon-cutting ceremonies. The world will be busy reconstructing secular structures. Shiva and Mother Ganga will remain mute witnesses, perhaps.

Until a time, not long ago, these sacred spots were places of sadhana. Since ages, thousands of people have led exemplary lives in those virtually inaccessible places, contemplating on God. Swami Vivekananda had this experience: “I saw many great men in Hrishikesh. One case that I remember was that of a man who seemed to be mad. He was walking nude down the street, with boys pursuing and throwing stones at him. The man was bubbling over with laughter while blood was streaming down his face and neck. I took him and bathed the wound, putting ashes on it to stop the bleeding. And all the time, with peals of laughter he told me of the fun the boys and he had been having, throwing the stones. 'So the Father plays', he said.”

Even now there are many holy people. Every inch of those parts, every drop of water, every small temple is alive with spiritual vibrations. What respect people have for Mother Ganga still is evident from Swami Vivekananda’s words: “Last time I went to the West, I also took a little of it [Ganga] with me, fearing it might be needed, and whenever opportunities occurred, I used to drink a few drops of it. And every time I drank, in the midst of the stream of humanity, amid that bustle of civilisation, that hurry of frenzied footsteps of millions of men and women in the West, the mind at once became calm and still, as it were.”

Now, many holy places are generally tourist centres. Don’t say India lacks aspirants. For many ‘civilised’ Indians, deep into power, secularism, cricket, and so on, temples and spirituality may perhaps be superfluous. But there are countless other Indians who even now strive and struggle to practice sadhana, go on pilgrimages suffering much, taking the difficult routes. Not just Indians, thanks to the efforts of Swami Vivekananda, the whole world is getting drawn now towards India for spiritual inspiration and hundreds visit such places seeking spirituality. And many are amazed to see ‘civilised’ Indians neglecting their priceless treasures. Thousands of non-Indians are realising the value of the spiritual wealth of India. They are ready to undergo any hardship to obtain them and come from all these places.

Though this aspiration and spiritual seeking will continue to resonate, the environment can change. Where there were sacred temples, there can be modern structures with the resultant squalor. Where there was silence, there can be loud music; where prayer, illegal supermarkets and five-star hotels; where meditation, bars and bureaucratic rest houses; where cleanliness, abject pollution; and where pilgrimages, comfortable tourism so far as the pocket can handle.

If this is just tourism, why tour such places? May be to see the Himalayas, but they say even glaciers are getting reduced. Is it to see the forests? Felling trees in even protected “forests” for construction is no crime and so there are virtually no forests. Is it to experience the silence of the sacred places? Truck and bus drivers answer pleas to “please sound horn” dedicatedly and you are to bear the brunt. Then, there are the smaller vehicles filling the roads, and the ever-growing population to enthrall you. At least until recently, people saw one other scene daily: long lines of trucks carrying away loads of stones elsewhere from the riverbed, or to machines that pulverise them. How many years does it take for nature to manufacture a stone the size of a football? How many seconds does it take for the machine to powder it and make slabs?

Some blame God for natural calamities. Indeed. Never-ending greed, illegal mining, deforestation, illegal (and, rarely, legal) constructions, use of non-quality materials to construct roads and bridges, criminal pollution, throwing all norms to the winds ~ and then, blame God. Who is to blame for the constant removal of riverbed stones, or for loosening the soil by felling trees? Maybe, Mother Nature has her methods of protecting herself and living beings, but human greed steals it all ~ and then, blames God.

Further, blame God because the powerful do not wake up and prepare for annual rains, with all the forecasts available now. Are rains new to those places? Again, blame God, because in today’s world of mobiles and communication, many tourists could not be in safer zones. If not God, at least blame rains and cloud-bursts for the lack of preparedness.

Amidst all this, the bright lights are the brave rescue workers. No words can fully thank the Indian rescue squad ~ the brave and selfless soldiers as well as others ~ who give their lives for others. They are the true heroes. Swami Nigamanandaji, who died for a noble cause was one other soul of this nature. There are countless others, silently working to save the Ganga and also help those stuck helplessly. This world will not remember them after some days. But the prayers of every sincere Indian are there for them, and for those who unfortunately lost their lives. Swami Vivekananda’s words are significant: “They alone live who live for others and the rest are more dead than alive.”

Tragedies happen. Natural calamities are unavoidable. But destruction can perhaps be minimised by action and not reaction, and by learning from past experiences. We don’t lack in past experiences, do we? We can be clean, safe, strong and healthy if we decide to be so. But until we realise that the mode of national development should not be politics-based, we shall continue to suffer, perhaps. Who knows?

The writer is a monk of the Ramakrishna Mission’s Centre Vedantique in Geneva.

SLAVERY IN ANY FORM IS NOT A JOKE !
SLAVERY IS BEING REMOVED FROM TEXT BOOKS AS A CAUSE OF THE CIVIL WAR !
THOSE WHO FAIL TO OPPOSE EVIL ARE ACCOMPLICE TO IT !!

When the news first broke that former Food Network star Paula Deen was defending herself in court against allegations that she’d used the word “nigger” and fantasized about a plantation wedding that would employ an all-black waitstaff to serve white guests, one of the things I was struck by in her deposition was Deen’s sense that she was the real victim. She suggested that the media would misinterpret her plans for the wedding. She said she couldn’t possibly know what kinds of racial humor might offend people who were the target of it. It was a series of statements that suggested that Deen felt she had a right to be read in the most charitable light possible–but absolutely no responsibility to think about the feelings of others, or to consider how her words and actions might reasonably be interpreted.

Second, Bobby uses another argument common to people who have been accused of using racially hurtful language, racist imagery, or practicing disparate treatment of their employees. He tries to turn the tables and suggest that the hurt to his mother from these allegations is worse than employees who had to hear her use the term “nigger,” or as Sheldon J. Ervin, the employee who says he was paid in beer and was fired for speaking up, alleges, lost wages they were entitled to because Deen was too cheap to pay them.

Texas Board of Education Revises Textbooks: Slaves were “Unpaid Interns”
DALLAS — The Texas Board of Education has drawn scrutiny in recent years for its efforts to revise its curriculum to favor more conservative-friendly versions of history and science. After revising textbooks last year to emphasize Christian influences on the Founding Fathers and introduce Intelligent Design to biology classes, the Board voted nine to zero today to change official nomenclature regarding slavery. In Texas, students will now be taught that slaves were not kidnapped and exploited against their will, but were actually “unpaid interns.”..

Thomas Jefferson:
"slavery passed through the mother with no diminution regardless of ancestry, and had nothing to do with the color line. Only upon emancipation would a former slave’s membership in either of America’s endogamous groups become an issue. And so, Jefferson explained, specifically referring to one of his European-looking slaves, “if emancipated, he becomes a free white man [emphasis Jefferson’s], and a citizen of the United States to all intents and purposes.”4

There were more Irish slaves than black slaves!

Native Americans were sold by the 100's of 1000's into slavery! Carolina actually exported as many or even more Indian slaves than it imported enslaved Africans prior to 1720.

President Andrew Johnson, who succeeded Abraham Lincoln in the White House once said " (I) wish[ed] to God [that] every head of a family in the United States had one slave to take the drudgery and menial service off his family." .

Reflecting upon 40 years
at the Wakefield Daily Item

By PETER ROSSI

As you may have read in Bud Keohan’s piece the other day, Friday, June 28 will be my final day at the Wakefield Daily Item, closing out a 40 year career here and 43 years in the journalism business.

I’ve never liked writing about myself and have largely avoided doing so in the 25 years I’ve been the editor here on Albion Street and in the 15 years prior to that that I sat at the sports editor’s desk while also writing police and fire news for much of that time.

But I couldn’t let my closing days here pass without a bit of reflection and some thanks.

As I said in Bud’s piece the other day, in many ways, it’s hard to believe 40 years have passed since I came to the Daily Item. But when I stop to think about some of the people I’ve met and written about, some who’ve passed away and had buildings and facilities named after them, like Atty. Bill Lee, John McCarthy Sr., Tom Butler and Frank Charbonneau, the time does feel like decades.

When I first came to Wakefield after a stint at the then family-owned Melrose Free Press, Wakefield was just emerging from a string of devastating arson-related fires that forever changed the landscape of the town. While at the weekly just south of us, I can vividly recall a Daily Item front page. It was dramatically filled by a single photo of one of the fires downtown. It was an emotional time for the town.

Little did I know that just 11 months after arriving at my new sports/news post at the Daily Item I would be thrust onto one of the most emotional roller coaster events of my career. My boss at the time, retired Item President and Publisher Bob Dolbeare, called me at home, telling me a huge fire had broken out at the Ames Drug building at the corner of Main and Albion streets, where the East Boston Savings Bank now stands, literally a stone’s throw away from the Daily Item building.

Living in the north part of Melrose at the time, I headed out the door and could immediately smell the smoke from the Wakefield fire. Dolbeare, myself and the late Bud Bourdon watched the fire for a time from the second floor of the Bourdon Building, across from the Ames building on the north side of Main and Albion streets. It was around 11 p.m., if I recall correctly, on the night of March 11, 1974, that I bumped into the late Fire Chief Walter V. Maloney Jr. at the scene. There had been a rumor that Lt. Robert Sullivan was missing. He was still missing when I left the still-roaring fire at 2 a.m.

The following morning a tearful firefighter, Warren Sullivan, a brother of Robert, crossed the Princess Street parking lot, heading slowly to the fire station. It was then I knew that Lt. Sullivan — father of our current Fire Chief Michael — had died in the fire. Talking to Chief Maloney in the old firehouse that morning was one of the toughest jobs I had to do in 40 years.

The reason I remember the date so vividly was that just a few hours later on March 12, 1974, my wife and I welcomed our first child into the world.

The full range of emotions over that 24-hour period has always stayed with me.

The March 24, 1977 fire that destroyed St. Joseph Church stands out in my mind for an event in the early stages of the multiple-alarm blaze. When the box alarm came in just before noon, I went just down the street and stood on the Albion Street sidewalk as the fire apparatus moved behind the structure. Chief Maloney had walked to the front of what was his parish church. It was just the two of us standing there, alone on the sidewalk, as smoke started to billow out the picturesque steeple of the church. We both knew that the end was near for the building. We said little.

But in constantly contrasting experiences on a small-town newspaper, there were also days of joyous events, many of them coming during my days covering Wakefield High sports.

I’ll never forget Charlie Driscoll’s unbeaten 1980 WHS hockey team that lost in the playoffs at the old Boston Garden to a St. John’s Prep squad led by future NHL star Bobby Carpenter. Dave McCarty was an assistant on that club and became the head coach a year later. His loyalty to the Daily Item, and to me, has never been forgotten.

Speaking of loyalty to the Daily Item, you’d be hard pressed to find two more reliable men than former WHS track and cross country coaches Jim Duff and John “Deke” DiComandrea. For years the Item would run a school road race in June and they could always be counted on to lend a hand and could always be counted on for supplying results of their meets and races for decades and decades to come.

There were scores of coaches who would drop by the Item in the days before the Internet when face-to-face contact was constant, men like the late girls’ basketball coach Bernie Plansky and the late girls’ soccer Coach Noel Higgins, a real character if there ever was one, who would be bleary-eyed after an all night shift in his job at Logan airport.

While the title teams at WHS were an emotional high, I’ll never forget the first football season for the late Bob Connors. He was coming from a wildly successful program at Waltham High but his first season here in 1984 was winless. He handled the losses with a calming grace. After all of the home losses, there would be a gentle knock on the coaches’ room door at WHS. It would be one of Connor’s daughters. He would pause his post-game interview for a bit of time with one of his children. It was a lesson in having your priorities in order.

When I moved into the editor’s spot, a highlight on the calendar would always be the visit by Wakefield native and former Supreme Allied Commander Gen. John R. Galvin and a cadre of generals from the former Soviet Union. The generals would poke around Wakefield, following a sumptuous morning community breakfast and get a taste of life “on the other side.” One year Life Magazine followed them around and featured the tour.

The Fourth of July events were always fun family-centered events. Here’s wishing that the parade can resume sometime in the near future.

The technological changes I’ve seen have been nothing short of amazing. When I started out reporters would bang out stories on Royal typewriters, take scissors to snip and cut sentences and use a bottle of glue with a brush to paste and rearrange paragraphs. AP teletype machines would clatter in the background, one, two or three bells signaling a “bulletin.” Digital photography was unheard of and guys like the late Joe Hakey would spend hours in the darkroom developing film and printing photographs —- a process that would take hours now literally takes seconds.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t thank the Dolbeare family, the owners of this newspaper, for their unfettered approach to newsroom management. It made my job that much easier.

As I told reporter Keohan the other day, the position of a newspaper editor entertains trust from the readers and a commitment to try your best to ‘get it right.’ I hope I have done that in my time here. The job is never boring. What I’ll miss most is that challenge and the people I’ve worked with, both presently and in the past.

I’ll continue to maintain a strong interest in the town since my son’s family lives here and my grandchildren will soon be fully engaged in the Wakefield school system.

Thanks Wakefield. Where have the 40 years gone?

Parliament urged to collaborate with CSOs

Mr Dominic Nitiwul, Deputy Minority Leader, on Monday urged Parliament to effectively collaborate with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) to achieve an accountable, transparent and responsive government.

He acknowledged that such collaboration would lead to an open government to serve as the essential foundation for economic, social and political progress.

Mr Ntiwul, speaking at a forum organised by STAR-Ghana, added that it would also create avenue for strengthening the transparency of institutions while maintaining the privacy of citizens.

The forum, which was on the theme: “Civil Society Collaboration; A Pre-requisite for Accountable Transparent and Responsive Government,” sought to foster such collaboration between Parliament and CSOs.

Mr Ntiwul identified access to information, transparency, and tax transparency, freedom of information, record management, and whistleblower protection as well as anti corruption strategy as key elements for good governance.

The Deputy Minority Leader said CSOs and Parliament should pool resources and work closely irrespective of their mandate to build on Ghana’s democratic credentials.

Mr Nitiwul explained that the participation of civil society and citizens in general in policy making, governance and public service was critical to ensuring a healthy and vibrant democracy, good decision making, responsive and trusted institutions.

Mr Fritz Baffour, Member of Parliament (MP) for Ablekuma South, a representative of Majority in Parliament, affirmed that the effective discharge of the constitutional functions imposed on Parliament could be strengthened based on accountability, transparency and responsive governance.

He said civil society through its collaboration with Parliament was necessary to ensure that government adhered to the principles of transparency and accountability because of its unique characterization.

Mr Baffour said as law-making arm of government; Parliament’s functions were critical in attaining the needs of the people. “It’s therefore crucial to develop partnership arrangements with relevant civil society organisations to effectively ensure that governance system is accountable, transparent and responsive,” he added.

Mr Ibrahim Tanko Amidu, Programme Manager STAR-Ghana, said CSOs needed to reframe the way in which they engaged Parliament to reflect an understanding of the institution’s unique and difficult role.

He said Parliament went through difficult and diverse perspectives to serve various interests to arrive at policies that sought to achieve national goal and cohesion.

He tasked CSOs to step out of their comfort zones and explore innovative ways of engaging and collaborating with each other for Ghana to be the winner at the end.

Have you ever just laid on your back and looked up at the stars? Even in the city, on a clearish night in your backyard? Bug-spray helps, but you should take a shower after (from experience). You can even make snow-angels in the grass if you like. When the clouds move off, and the moon is in a different place, you can see the stars--the heavens--and they look so beautiful and deep. Sometimes I wish I were a super-hero with magnified vision so I could see all the way to the top. But there is no top. And that's what makes it so awesome. Infinity . . . infinity.

To know something's out there so deep and so wide and so rich with unknowns that I can't wrap my hands or my brain around it.

To know something's up there.

I focused on one star last night. I wondered what was going on up there. Truthfully, I wanted to be there (beam me up, Scotty, no intelligent lifeforms down here :).

Then I thought: What a WONDERFUL universe. How VAST--beyond our comprehension--is this place. How humbling and beautiful to realize how very small I am.

And yet I'm here. I exist. I matter. I go on (49 years & counting!). I am apparently of some value, or I wouldn't keep wasting space in the cosmos.

[PREACH-ALERT!]

Oh, my dear friends. When I see the stars, I see a face. A friend. A God, before whom I must fall on my face in weakness before he lifts me up and fills me with his Spirit and allows me--even me--to stand in confidence (in Christ) before his throne, so that I may receive grace and mercy. He saved me out of the slimiest pit imaginable (Psalm 40). I put this out on Facebook for one reason:

Maybe you are hurting today. Maybe you--like me--tried to scrub off the sin and shame and guilt with Brillo-pads, but it wouldn't go away ("Out, Damned Spot! -- Macbeth). Maybe you tried to drink or drug or run away the pain, but it always comes back.

But there is Good News for you. A message from ABOVE the stars:

You are dearly loved by Jesus Christ. He is fully God and fully man. He died for you. If you invite him--you can just ask it out loud, or in your mind--he will enter your spirit and give you new LIFE! And if you do that ... the heavens await us.

Yesterday we arrived back at Nottingham. Claudia started back on her intrathecal and oral etoposide. She had her full bloods done too and they remain great.
Today however, has been a very long and stressful day, we arrived at QMC first thing for her intrathecal chemotherapy. When we had finished, we met OT who made some special casts of Claudia's legs so that they can make some insteps and splints. We discussed this last week and it has been decided to try and get Claudia back up on her feet again, to strengthen her skeleton and to give her organs and digestive system a chance to work better. We also thought it just might make her happy!
After that, it was around to see Clic Sargent and then straight to ambulatory care for midday where we were booked in for her ga and mri. She 'went under' at 1445 and I was sat holding her hand as she came round at 1620. Back to the ward for an hour of obs......(which were great) and then finally back to Billy's. Tired just doesn't cover it :-O
Claudia is in great spirits though and it was fabulous for everyone who hasn't seen her for a few months to catch up. Every single one of they commented on how well she looks and that her weight gain suits her :-D

I was in New York several years ago while they were filming a movie in central park. No one there even stopped to check it out. Last November, I was in Vegas while they filmed a tv series in one of the casino's. A couple passing glances, but nothing major.

However, bring a reality show star to Casper, WY, front page of the paper, covered by every local news, barricades set up to hold back all the spectators, and a Facebook newsfeed so excited, you would think we invented the polio vaccine!

OMG, I just saw the scariest thing ever last night around 11p.m. (even more so than a spider). I hope someone else saw it too other than me and Michael. It was a floating orange flame or something it was getting REALLY close to us. I could see the thing burning NO KIDDING! And as it got closer and I freaked out it lost the flame and looked like a glowing orange star! It was BRIGHT, it hovered over us in the drive way for maybe 30seconds to 1 min. I said something and the thing LITERALLY went backwards and then turned right going toward LMU. It SERIOUSLY floated away, and it knew where it was going I can tell it was not just blowing around like a leaf or anything. UGH please tell me someone else saw this thing? If ANYONE sees anything on the news about it let me know please. I want to know what it was. I am really scared, amazed, confused, and stunned by what we saw.
