1. Betsy Ross is widely credited with designing the first American flag, but there is almost no evidence to support that claim. The only records of Ross' involvement came from her own grandson in 1870, when he presented the Historical Society of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia with affidavits from his own family members as evidence. Instead, many historians believe that Francis Hopkinson deserves the credit, because early journals from the Continental Congress are said to explicitly name him as the flag's designer.
2. Karen Burke of Walmart's Corporate Communications revealed that Walmart stores sold around 115,000 American flags on September 11, 2001, as compared to 6,400 flags on the same date in 2000. In the year following 9/11 (September 11, 2001, through August 19, 2011), they sold 7.8 million American flags as compared to 2.5 million the year before.
3. A 17-year old student designed the flag as it appears today. In anticipation of Alaska and Hawaii becoming states, Robert G. Heft created the 50-star flag as part of a history project (for which he received a B-) before submitting it to Congress for consideration. In August of 1959, President Dwight D. Eisenhower chose Heft's design over 1,500 other applicants and informed him of the news over the phone. (Heft's teacher also changed his grade to an A).
4. During the opening sequence (about 22 seconds in) of first-season episodes of "Gilligan's Island," the U.S. Flag can be seen flying at half-staff off in the distance. This is because the show's pilot episode finished filming on November 22, 1963 — the same day that President Kennedy was assassinated.
5. Despite the harsh temperatures and conditions of the moon's atmosphere, five of the six flags that were planted during the Apollo missions are still standing. According to Buzz Aldrin, the one that fell was blown over by the exhaust from Apollo 11 during its liftoff from the moon's surface.
6. According to the U.S. Department of State, the names of the flag's official colors are old glory red, white, and old glory blue. Their HTML codes and Pantone equivalents can be found on the Department of State's style guide.
7. Flag Day isn't technically a federal holiday, and it's not a state holiday outside of Pennsylvania and New York. Furthermore, New York's official observance of Flag Day isn't June 14, but rather the second Sunday in June.
8. Richard Williams, the animation director for "Who Framed Roger Rabbit," said that he modeled the title character's colors after Old Glory (red overalls, white fur, blue tie). "It looked like an American flag — subliminally speaking — so everybody liked it."
9. There are federal regulations governing the handling and display of the flag (the U.S. Flag Code), including restrictions on using the flag's likeness for advertising, or printing it on anything intended "for temporary use or discard," like cocktail napkins or paper plates. Under the Flag Protection Act of 1989, there are also federal laws that call for criminal penalties for certain forms of flag desecration, although the Supreme Court found this act to be unconstitutional under the First Amendment in 1990.
10. Old Glory was actually the nickname of a specific U.S. Flag, namely, the one owned by sea captain William Driver. He was previously given the flag by the women in his hometown of Salem, Massachusetts, but he only named it Old Glory upon seeing it flying on his ship's mast in 1831. The name later went on to become synonymous with any American flag.

We find MOOCH AND THE GIRLS enjoying a little pre-Africa vacation time in Belfast, Ireland at the cost of $3,300-per-night in the Princess Grace suite of Dublin’s Five-Star Shelbourne Hotel.
The suite is the best the luxury hotel has to offer, featuring two beds, two bathrooms, four phones and three large televisions. The bedding is 100 percent Egyptian cotton and comes with turndown service, a Nespresso machine and butler service.
According to press reports out of Ireland, 30 rooms have been booked in the hotel to accomodate Michelle and her entourage, which would presumably include various staff and a bevy of Secret Service agents.
The city will be plagued by traffic jams during Michelle’s visit, and according to one report, high school and university students are in danger of being late for final exams and are advised to allow for plenty of extra time for travel.
After visiting Dublin, Mrs. Obama and her daughters will join President Obama in Berlin for the second leg of his European trip.

Meanwhile, a mini army of Shelbourne Hotel staff were giving the front facade of the famous old building a final wipedown – as gardai and American Secret Service agents hovered in the background.
Nothing was being left to chance – it was all hands on deck for the arrival of yet another famous visitor. This time it's Michelle Obama, the wife of US President Barack Obama.
She will be staying in the hotel – along with their daughters Malia (14) and Sasha (12) – while her husband discusses global affairs at the G8 summit about 160km up the road in deepest Fermanagh.
But yesterday afternoon both Shelbourne management and staff were staying strictly mum as the countdown to the arrival of its most famous guest in recent years got under way.
A number of gardai were strategically placed at the front and sides of the hotel.

THE GOODWIN GAMES – Where there’s a will, there’s a way. And when that will’s worth more than 20 million dollars, you can bet someone’s going to find a way to get the cash.
From the executive producers of “How I Met Your Mother,” THE GOODWIN GAMES is a single-camera comedy that tells the story of three grown siblings who return home after their father’s death, and unexpectedly find themselves poised to inherit a vast fortune – if they adhere to their late father’s wishes.
If any of the Goodwin kids feel like they deserve the money, then it’s HENRY (Scott Foley, “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Felicity”), the eldest child and an overachieving surgeon. He sees himself as a role model for his less successful siblings – and reminds them every chance he gets. Returning home will force Henry to question the choices he’s made, especially as he reconnects with his first love and true soulmate, LUCINDA (Felisha Terrell, “Days of Our Lives”).
Middle sibling CHLOE (Becki Newton, “Ugly Betty”) was a child prodigy in math, and her unofficial role as “the smart one” of the family still sends Henry into fits of jealousy. But long ago, Chloe gave up academics in favor of being the popular girl. Now, through a series of hidden messages, her late father will lead Chloe back to her old love of numbers – and back to the person she’s meant to be.
Of the three siblings, the youngest, JIMMY, could use the inheritance the most. A small-time ex-con and dull-witted guitarist who’s deep in debt to a loan shark, Jimmy may be the family screw-up, but he has more heart than anyone. Like his siblings, Jimmy’s also returning to something in this town: his eight-year-old daughter.
Pulling the strings from beyond the grave is the children’s late father, BENJAMIN (guest star Beau Bridges, “The Descendants”), a college math professor. Guilty over not parenting his kids better, Benjamin has left behind a series of unique challenges – administered by his estate attorney APRIL (newcomer Melissa Tang). Through these tasks, Benjamin hopes he can get his children to rediscover their true selves and learn the lessons he failed to instill in them while he was alive.
Their potential reward? More than 20 million dollars – a fortune that they never knew their father had – and the chance to become the people their father wanted them to be. So let THE GOODWIN GAMES begin!.
Mindy is determined to be more punctual, spend less money, lose weight and read more books – all in pursuit of becoming a well-rounded perfect woman…who can meet and date the perfect guy. Mindy is a skilled OB/GYN and shares a practice with a few other doctors, none of whom make life any easier for her. JEREMY REED (British writer/comedian Ed Weeks) is the walking definition of total bad news. He not only shares a practice with Mindy, but sometimes her bed as well – despite her best efforts to resist. He is funny, self-absorbed and super sexy.
In contrast, DANNY CASTELLANO (Chris Messina, “Damages”) is a hothead and guys’ guy who has a habit of stealing Mindy’s patients. Danny criticizes her for everything, including her struggling love life and her lack of professionalism – even though it’s obvious to everyone except Mindy that he secretly admires her work. His blue-collar childhood gives him a big chip on his shoulder, but he is a dedicated physician, which Mindy can’t stand to admit because he’s always getting on her case. Rounding out the office staff are the receptionists – BETSY PUTCH (Zoe Jarman, “Huge”), young, earnest and easily excitable, who thinks the world of Mindy and is always trying to impress her; and SHAUNA DICANIO (newcomer Dana DeLorenzo), a self-assured Jersey Girl who is indifferent to Mindy, always knows where the cool party is and carries a poorly concealed torch for Danny. Mindy is in constant communication with her beloved best friend from college, GWEN GRANDY (Anna Camp, “The Good Wife”), who also happens to be the governor’s daughter. Gwen is a hilarious, sometimes too-blunt friend, and secretly a former carefree party girl (which only Mindy seems to remember). Although Gwen is now happily married to a financial analyst, with a six-year-old daughter, this lawyer-turned-Pilates mom remains squarely in Mindy’s corner. As Mindy attempts to get her career off the ground and meet a guy who passes her red flag test (no drug habits, no skinny jeans and no secret families, among others), only time will tell if she gets her romantic comedy ending.

(FM97 News / AP) — A bill pending before Governor Neil Abercrombie would allow wealthy donors to claim tax deductions on their entire donations made to nonprofit organizations. The Star-Advertiser reports state lawmakers in 2011 approved temporary caps on itemed deductions by high-income taxpayers to address a state budget deficit. Critics say the measure, which is due to expire in 2016, had the effect of lowering donations to nonprofit organizations because wealthy donors scaled back gifts when they couldn't write them off. House Majority Leader Scott Saiki sponsored the bill that would remove charitable donations from caps. The exception is projected to cost the state $12 million dollars annually. Both nonprofit organizations and donors had asked legislators to approve the measure.

June 9th, 2013, took a lot of people back to yester-decade when "Mornings at Home" were popular outings at the Institutes in Tanzania.
Here's why: The Tanzanite Toronto Committee organized an event reminiscent of or perhaps even better than, the very enjoyable, casual events that most of us experienced in our younger days.
Setting the mood was the Kreme Krackers band (who had to cut short their world tour to play for this event) and the music. The band comprised those seasoned musicians whose names are familiar to most of us: Alwyn Mendes, Raymond D'Souza, Tony 'Leao' Fernandes, Steve 'Pard' Pereira, Greg D'Souza, Nap Rebello and Braz Dias. Guest star was Auggie Pereira of Tanga on the saxophone.
The music ranged from those golden oldies of the 1960's, to the popular Kiswahili ballads, to the music of today, and catered to the young, to the line dancers and to those who still cherish the Waltzes and Cha Chas.
Tucked away in one of the four corners of the hall was an activity table for the very young who I believe, had the most fun. They were showered with activities to keep them occupied and happy. In another corner, was a table loaded with the door, spot-dance and raffle prizes. The third corner supported the bar. A bar filled with the best of beers and spirits whose reasonable prices called out to many. And for those who are particular, yes, there was a fourth corner, and it was marked with an "X"!
A very casual afternoon, folks; one that flowed very smoothly with activities. An afternoon that allowed those who wanted to catch up with news, to do so. An afternoon that allowed the more active to burn those calories in the line dances. An afternoon that had floor shows too. The one that caught most of us by surprise was when the Adult Committee put up a dressed dance routine, only to get shooed off the floor by the Young Adults they were mentoring. This planned entertainment looked spontaneous at the time and everybody had a good laugh. The show that captured our hearts were the little ones in khangas, who treated us to a dance to the song Waka Waka.
Oh! The food? We got treated twice. Once as soon as we entered the hall and then mchuzi ya mbuzi na wali for lunch. Dessert was for those who did not tuck in enough earlier.
But wait, there's more. No Morning at Home would be complete without Bingo (Tambola as we were used to it back then) and we were treated to not one, but two rounds. A quick door ticket and raffle draw also meant that thirty lucky people went home with more than memories.......

- Normally, we cook the instant noodles by putting the noodles into a pot of boiled water or
a bowl of hot water, throw in the soup powder and let it cook for 3 mins.

- This is the WRONG method of cooking the instant noodles.

- By doing this, when we actually boil the ingredients in the soup powder, normally with
MSG (monosodium glutamate), it will change the molecular structures of the MSG causing it
to be toxic.

- The other thing that you may or may not realized is that, the noodles are coated with wax
and it will take around 4 to 5 days for the body to excrete the wax after you have taken the
noodles.

- So the CORRECT method, which you may or may not know, is to cook the noodles this

1. Boil the noodles in a pot with water.

2. Once the noodles is cooked, take out the noodles, and throw away the water which

powder into the water, to make noodle soup.

5. However, if you need dry noodles, take out the noodles and add the soup powder and toss
it to get dry noodles.

The billion-euro Herschel space telescope has been switched off.
Controllers on Monday emptied the satellite's fuel tanks and commanded the observatory to sever all communications.
The "passivated" spacecraft is now in a slow drift around the Sun, about 2.14 million km from Earth.
With its 3.5m mirror and three state-of-the-art instruments, Herschel was the most powerful observatory of its kind ever put in space.

A Summer Vacation Home Isn't as Out of Reach as You Think
Vacation is on everyone’s mind as the summer housing season heats up, but is a second home or summer rental right for you? No matter where you live, a few key strategies can land you a getaway for less, meaning a summer vacation home isn’t as out of reach as you might think.
Summer rentals are the budget solution with a national nightly rate of $225, which comes out to be much less than what a family might spend in June to stay at a three-star hotel in Las Vegas. And with a rental you can get more space and amenities like a full kitchen and private pool.
You can also make it last the entire season. Summer shares split between family or friends during peak months might run you as little as $3,000 to $5,000 per family.
For tricks on how to save on a summer rental, note that the key is prioritizing — and sacrifice. In the accompanying video, Corcoran Real Estate Broker Jack Pearson offers some key tips for saving money on a rental.
For example, Pearson says a pool can add 20% to 30% to a rental price, but being on the ocean can mean you pay 10 times more than you would for a house further inland with a pool.
According to Pearson, a two-bedroom house will save you the most money on the rental rate. Three bedrooms can add 10%, four bedrooms causes a 20% to 25% increase, and five bedrooms will run you 30% to 40% more.
You can also save money with last-minute deals and by looking in off-peak months or non-traditional locations. We give some examples in the video.
To see these savings tips and more in action, Pearson takes us on a tour through some homes in the Hamptons, where he and his business partner Cee Scott Brown are Corcoran’s top realtors. The Hamptons, a popular summer retreat for many New Yorkers, is known for its high-end homes, but Pearson emphasizes that the same cost-saving principles he highlights would apply anywhere.
For those in the market to buy a vacation home, there’s good news for you as well: you don’t have to be a millionaire to score one.
According to the National Association of Realtors, the typical investment-home buyer in 2012 had a median age of 45 and earned $85,700 — and about half of them got a mortgage to help with financing. Rental income is one motivation.
In addition, there are vacation spots across the country where home prices are still down 23% to 44% from 2008, where median existing home prices are under $140,000.
And in terms of knowing whether it’s a good time to buy, according to NAR, 78% of second-home purchasers say it is. That compares with 68% of primary-residence buyers, indicating the second-home set may be first in sensing the market come back.
