SAN ANTONIO — An 11-year-old Latino boy whose singing of the national anthem at the NBA Finals set off a barrage of racist tweets earned a roaring ovation in an encore performance Thursday night.
Sebastien De La Cruz, a mariachi singer, was congratulated by San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich and Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra at midcourt afterward.
His second act followed an outpouring of support following disparaging tweets about Latinos during his nationally televised performance before Game 3 this week.
Popovich bemoaned "idiots" who posted bigoted comments. He called De La Cruz "a class act."
Other celebrities and politicians are also rallying behind De La Cruz. They include San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro and actress Eva Longoria, formerly married to Spurs star Tony Parker.

Over the last couple of weeks, we had been reporting of a major announcement that was expected to be coming from HIW office. This HUGE news broke this morning in a press release on the HIW Canada website:
“High Impact Wrestling is proud to announce that it has officially launched a second promotion under the “HIW” banner. The new promotion, which will be named “High Impact Wrestling Wildside” or in its shortened form “HIW Wildside”, officially opened its doors for business this morning and the new office has already been hard at work through the night securing talent to perform for the new company.
HIW Wildside and HIW Canada will run independently of each other under the parent company High Impact Wrestling. Each will have their own event schedule, and feature completely different rosters of performers than one another.
HIW’s major events, known as the “Big Three” which include “Spring MELTDOWN”, “Pile O’ Bones Rumble”, and “King’s Challenge”, will now become shared events, and will feature talent from both promotions.
The official HIW training school, the High Impact Training Academy, will now become a shared facility, offering training to prospects and new students secured by either company.
Many Wildside perfomers will make their debut in the 30 man Rumble at Pile O’ Bones Rumble XVIII in July. The order in which Wildside performers are eliminated will directly affect seeding in a tournament to be held later this year to determine the first HIW Wildside champion, although won’t finalize all seeds as some will be determined via qualifying matches at a later date. If a Wildside performer should win the Rumble, he will bypass seeding and will have earned the right to wrestle the winner of the Wildside championship tournament. In subsequent years, if a Wildside roster member should win the Rumble, he will earn the #1 contender spot for his respective company’s title, as would a member of the HIW Canada roster.
The inaugural HIW Wildside event is slated for Friday, Sept. 20th. No other information on the event is available at this time.
We at High Impact Wrestling are very excited about this new project and are very much looking forward to watching this new company grow alongside its sister company, HIW Canada. Wildside will open doors and opportunities that were previously unavailable for performers across the country, and will offer wrestling fans an exciting alternative to the already available products.”

- Jacob Creed
Creed is a 6’ 3” 285lbs rough and tumble product of the High Impact Training Academy. The cowboy, originally hailing from Ludlow, Missouri, likes a good fight as much as he loves a good party. Creed has a decorated background in the martial art of Muay Thai, which combined with his physical size and brute strength, makes him a VERY dangerous competitor.
- Fil Deadly
Deadly is a student of the Lance Storm Academy, run by former ECW/WCW/WWE star Lance Storm. Deadly is still fresh to the ring, but is steadily growing his offensive arsenal and will be a force in WIldside. His brash cocky attitude and flashy style may not earn him many friends in the locker room or in the audience, but if this young prospect can meet his already bright potential to back up that cocky attitude, he’ll be unstoppable!
- Ace Riviera
Ace has been around the Canadian wrestling scene for a few years now. He received his formal training from Canadian wrestling star, Mentallo, and wrestled briefly for HIW Canada a year ago. This young star has a black belt in judo which gives him a quickness in movement and striking ability that most other grapplers do not possess. He makes up for his small stature with stellar mat work and a no fear attitude when standing across the ring from an opponent. Watch for this kid to make some waves.
- Rockstar
The Rockstar returns to High Impact Wrestling for the first time since July of 2012, but this time he’ll be lighting up the crowd under the WIldside banner! Many were surprised when the former Great Plains Provincial champion signed with the fledgling company but after a lengthy stay in Japan to find himself, he decided that Wildside would be the best fit for his wild wrestling style. This young man will definitely be a contender for Wildside gold when the championship tournament goes down later this year!
The official Wildside website is set to launch early next week, although the Facebook page is now active (see below link) and a Twitter account is expected to be up and running before the end of the day today.

Tax evasion: Messi’s lawyers ready
Lionel Messi’s legal and fiscal council Angel Juarez has stressed the Barcelona star has not been notified that a complaint has been filed over his alleged tax fraud, and added that they are ready for a potential legal battle with the Spanish tax authorities.
Prosecutor Raquel Amado is investigating claims that the Argentine and his father have avoided paying the charges due from sales of the 25-year-old’s image rights by operating through companies based outside of the country and filed a complaint with the courthouse in the Gava district of Barcelona on Wednesday.
On Wednesday, Messi expressed his surprise at the accusatinos and is adamant they have not committed any infringement, adding that his legal representatives are equally confident about the outcome of the case.
“We’d like to express our surprise with the news published by several media outlets. Hezbollah will keep fighting in Syria: Nasrallah
BEIRUT: Hezbollah will continue fighting alongside President Bashar Assad against Syrian rebels, the head of the resistance group said Friday, adding that his party’s decision to intervene in Lebanon’s neighbor had been a calculated one.
Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah also said recent steps taken by Gulf Cooperation Countries targeting Hezbollah loyalists in the Gulf would not deter his group from its objectives in Syria.
“If anyone thinks that through lies, killings, and threats we will change our stances, they are wrong. Wherever we need to be, we will be. What we started taking responsibility for, we will continue to be responsible for, and there is no need to give details," Nasrallah said in an event commemorating wounded members of Hezbollah.

4) PROMOTE THE COMING OF THEIR ANTICHRIST AS "MAITREYA" the world teacher who will present us with a plan to save humanity from nuclear war. The main promoter of this "messiah" is Benjamin Creme and Share International, whose site does much to hide their Luciferic Beliefs. Every year, Texas celebrates Texas Independence Day, where they commemorate their independence from Mexico. In recent years, though, it’s become a bit of a pep rally for some state residents who think Texas needs to secede from America — these tend to be guys who really just need to secede from AM radio and high-fructose corn syrup.
Seriously, earlier this year over 100,000 people signed an online petition demanding the Obama White House allow Texas to secede. At one point, even Gov. Rick Perry got in on the action, saying in speeches that Texas had the right to secede if they wanted to. Now, I love Texas. I’ve got family there, and I always thought this was an awful idea — but if they did secede, America should get to keep Austin. And San Antonio. And Willie Nelson.
Nowadays, Rick Perry’s in the news again by trying to bribe American businesses — with low taxes, low regulation and taxpayer funds — to secede from their own states and move to Texas. He’s running new commercials and hoping to pilfer enough corporations to help him run for president on job creation in 2016. I’d like to tell an original joke about Rick Perry running for president, but it’s hacky, it’s been done and — I forget the third thing.
But a Rick Perry candidacy is why I haven’t wanted Texas to secede because America really needs a leader who talks about quitting America.
This guy’s got a low-wage right-to-work state that’s 50th in high school graduations and first in worker deaths.
Now, I’m not here to put Rick Perry down, just to deny him clemency. But the great state of Texas has had some pretty bad PR this month.
Last week, Texas GOP Chair Ken Emanuelson said, “I’m going to be real honest with you: the Republican Party doesn’t want black people to vote if they’re going to vote 9 to 1 for Democrats.”
Used to be in Texas, a man would get arrested for exposing himself like that. But we let it slide.
But then, my friend, came Ezekiel Gilbert. Back on Christmas Eve 2009, he paid $150 for the company of a Craigslist escort. Her name was Lenora Frago, she was 23 and her ad did not guarantee sex, just her time. She decided she didn’t want sex with Mr. Gilbert. She left his home, her driver picked her up, and as they pulled away, Mr. Gilbert came out and shot her through the neck. She was paralyzed and died from complications seven months later.
And last week, because of a Texas law that allows people to use deadly force to recover property during a nighttime theft, the jury acquitted him and he walked free.
So what can I say except, ‘As of now, Texas, you’re free to go.’
Break it off at the panhandle and secede away. We’ll miss ya, but if legally murdering women for $150 is how it’s gonna be, we’re not gonna make you stick around. You can take the NAS, Big Oil, cotton, that new reboot of Dallas and Ted Nugent. I don’t even know if Ted lives in Texas, but please take him.
Go off on your own and become the whitest, twangiest, most northernmost province of Mexico. Your sane moral residents will be given free asylum here in America, and Gov. Perry will get to be el presidente del Republica de Tejico. Then he can woo even more American NAFTA jobs south of the border, where there’s no pesky minimum wage.
Keep all your guns, ban all your gays and here’s Puerto Rico to become the fiftieth star, so we don’t have to change the flag.
Oh, and we’ll be happy to finish that border fence — only it’s gonna be along your northern border. Try crossing and watch those Oklahoma militias go to town on you illegals. We’ll beg them not to shoot y’all, but they won’t have to listen, because, hey, states’ rights!
Now, of course, I’m just kidding. Nobody sane wants Texas to leave. In fact, if you look at the demographics you’ll see Texas is our biggest minority majority state. White folks — especially the mean ones — are becoming a minority. Which may be why Rick Perry is so hell-bent on cutting public education funds. But it doesn’t matter. Texas is becoming more blue every year. I’m not saying they’re about to become an all-solar-vegan-hemp-happy-clappy-gay-marriage-liberal colony, but it appears that within our lifetimes we can look forward to seeing the people of Texas secede — from the likes of Rick Perry.

Nasrallah denounces killing of protester outside Iran embassy
BEIRUT: Hezbollah chief Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah denounced Friday the recent killing of a Lebanese protester outside Iran's embassy in Beirut.
“We totally reject the incident that took place outside the Iranian Embassy and the killing was [deplorable] and this issue is being investigated,” he said.
He was referring to the June 9 shooting and killing of Hashem Salman outside the Iranian Embassy in Beirut. Salman, 28, who headed the student committee of the Lebanese Option Party, a fierce Hezbollah critic, was killed while protesting the resistance group’s military involvement in the Syrian conflict.

Bekaa Valley clan prepares to give up Hujeiri killing suspect

HERMEL, Lebanon: The Nassereddine clan, a powerful Shiite family of the northern Bekaa Valley, is preparing to turn over one of their own members suspected of murdering a member of a prominent Sunni family, clan sources told The Daily Star Thursday. The Nassereddine clan met Thursday to discuss the fate of Malek Nassereddine, the primary suspect in the killing of Ali Ahmad Hujeiri, the brother of a Salafi sheikh and a member of the Sunni Hujeiri clan from Arsal.
The clan decided collectively to pressure the suspect’s immediate family to turn him over to authorities in an effort to ease sectarian tensions in the area, the sources said.
Hujeiri and two of his companions were ambushed on the Hermel road Tuesday as they were driving back to their home from the north. Hujeiri was killed and the two others wounded and taken briefly before being released.
Sources from the Nassereddine family did not deny Malek Nassereddine was a likely suspect. They described him as an uneducated laborer who got caught up in the political fallout of the Syrian crisis, which has exacerbated sectarian tensions between Sunnis and Shiites, particularly along the Syrian border.

Time to pay NCAA athletes
The NCAA makes millions of dollars off of their athletic programs but the star recruits who help pack the arenas and stadiums have little to show for it other than an education - if they stick around long enough to graduate.
The NCAA needs to come up with a way to pay players in profitable sports. College students need money. Sometimes you want to eat something different than the cafeteria food or you may want to go out on a date or buy clothes. Some may even need to send money back home to help support the family.
Paying athletes is the right thing to do, especially when universities are making more money than they ever did due to television and shoe contracts.
This week a highly rated Texas high school wide receiver KD Cannon, posted a picture of himself with hundreds of dollars in his lap. The caption read: "It's real out here ya heard me." He deleted the post, but people want to know where did all of that money come from.
So far 14 schools have offered Cannon a scholarship and while there is no indication that the money came from a school trying to recruit him, the last thing a university wants is the NCAA sniffing around one of its recruits.
Cannon is 17 and I'm sure he regrets the post. He surely opened himself up to being a person who can easily be influence.
The NCAA can cut down on young athletes falling into the traps by paying them. Will paying athletes knock out all the leeches in sports? No, but it can help. It could also be the incentive to keep an athlete in school longer.

Lebanon police stop kidnapping of Kuwaiti
BEIRUT: Lebanese police foiled an attempt to kidnap a Kuwaiti businessman in the Mount Lebanon town of Bhamdoun, a security source said Friday.
The attempt took place around 8:30 p.m. Thursday and one of at least two suspects has been arrested, the source said, speaking to The Daily Star on condition of anonymity.

Yerba maté, where the moon and cloud goddesses meet

BEIRUT: The Guarani people of South America have a legend to explain the origin of yerba maté, a popular hot herbal drink. One day the goddesses of the moon and cloud came to earth and came across a jaguar, which was about to attack them when an old man stepped in and saved them from harm. To thank him, the goddesses presented him with a new plant, from which a “drink of friendship” could be made.
Maté, a drink prepared by steeping the cut and dried leaves of the yerba maté tree – a species of holly officially known as Ilex paraguariensis – is today enjoyed across large areas of South America and is the national drink of Argentina. It has also become a much-loved beverage in parts of Syria and Lebanon.
The plant, which resists cultivation outside its native South America, was brought back to the area by Lebanese and Syrian migrants who had moved to the region during the early 20th century. Having adopted the drink as their own, they continued their maté drinking habit when they returned to the Middle East. In the years before the civil war, Syria was the biggest importer of maté in the world.
Imbibing the “drink of the gods” is not like having a cup of coffee in the morning. It is a social ritual that brings communities closer together. Enjoyed in Lebanon primarily in the Chouf and other Druze areas, the ritual of preparing and drinking maté has been imported along with the plant itself.

Samir Sayegh’s typography revolution

BEIRUT: Master calligrapher Samir Sayegh is renowned as the leading contemporary practitioner of one of the Arab world’s oldest art forms. A lifetime of creating modern art out of historic Arabic scripts and enlivening a cultural tradition that he believes had calcified by the 20th century has earned him the reverent moniker of “moallem,” or teacher, in the Middle Eastern art community.
He is less well known, but equally revered, for literally adopting this role in 1992, when he agreed to teach calligraphy to students at the American University of Beirut’s newly created school of graphic design.
Sayegh’s class spawned a new generation of typographers who were ashamed, inspired and mildly outraged by the aesthetic decline of Arabic script over the past two centuries, especially when juxtaposed with Latin fonts.
The desire to modernize Arabic typeface so it could co-exist on different, but equal footing, with Latin counterparts motivated Sayegh’s former students like Lara Assouad, Tarek Atrissi and Nadine Chahine to design the first new Arabic typefaces in decades. These young Turks of Arabic typography have all publicly credited Sayegh’s class as their inspiration to enter a field that had long been dominated by Westerners.

With Abrams at the helm for the upcoming Star Wars films many enthusiasts will be excited and confident that the man himself intends bring the series back to the forefront of fans imagination. As news comes in the J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars Episode 7 will take the franchise onto a new level, the past films are also being acknowledged.
While fans are confident Abrams will produce a notable start to the next trilogy in a recent interview he declined to talk about how the expanded universe could have some bearing on the upcoming movies. Many are under the impression the essence of the expanded universe will be contemplated and IGN highlights how Abrams is aware this franchise is important to many people and mentions how he is honouring the background “but not revering what came before.”
It seems Abrams is reluctant to go into any detail of what can be expected anytime soon and his “no comment” stance with a smile on his face gives us confidence he has a few things up his sleeve, which could also mean he will give the films his own touch as well as respecting what come before him.
Abrams on Star Wars Episode 7 will be spectacular
In an article on Access Hollywood, news that George Lucas is excited for Abrams’ Star Wars gives us even more confidence, especially as Lucas says he understands the story, and feels the legacy is in good hands. When asking Lucas his opinion he said “I think he understands the whole thing and how it works“.
Only last week we spoke about the director moving to London, UK and mentioned that he is not entirely happy about uprooting his 13 and 14 year old children, although this didn’t seemed to be a derogatory explanation about the UK capital, but more about the changes to his familiar surroundings.
We also wrote a post about the Star Wars Episode 7 plot insight concerning the possibility that Han and Leia’s twin children may be the new protagonists in the next film. This gives us reason to believe the expanded universe will be used, although we also feel that J.J. Abram’s may have a few new surprises in store.
