Barcelona footballer Lionel Messi and his father are being investigated in Spain for allegedly defrauding the state of more than 4m euros (£3.4m).

The 25-year-old Argentina forward and his father, Jorge Horacio, are suspected of filing fraudulent tax returns for 2007-09, officials say.

The World Player of the Year expressed his surprise, denying the allegation.

His Barcelona net salary is said to be some 16m euros a year, making him one of the world's highest-paid athletes.

On Wednesday, a complaint signed by prosecutor Raquel Amado was filed at the courthouse in Gava - the affluent Barcelona district where Messi lives.

Judges at the courthouse must accept the complaint before the suspects can be charged, reports say.

In financial terms, 4m euros in the world of Lionel Messi is not a huge amount. According to Forbes, the Barcelona star currently earns more than 15m euros a year from his salary and prize money.

When you add in his earnings from sponsorship and the rights to his image, Forbes puts his total annual net income at more than 31m euros.

Messi is worshipped by Argentina and Barcelona football fans and admired all over the world for his ability on the pitch, and his humility off it. However the allegation the footballer and his father failed to declare millions of euros of income - while people in Spain, in general, pay more tax and often earn less, or don't have a job at all because of the economic crisis - is making headlines all over the Spanish media.

Messi and his father deny any wrongdoing, he still hasn't been charged and it could be a while until we know whether he will be because the legal system in Spain is notoriously slow moving. But despite all that, the scandal raises difficult questions, and the image of Lionel Messi could be damaged.

The player and his father are accused of three crimes of defrauding the state of taxes related to income from the use of his image.

They are suspected of using companies abroad - in Belize and Uruguay - to sell the rights to use the image.

The accusation is that with the help of firms based outside Spain, where he lives and plays club football, Messi and his father avoided paying more than 4m euros in tax.

If convicted, Messi could face up to six years in prison and a large fine, according to Spain's EFE news agency.

Responding to the allegations, Messi expressed his surprise, saying he had only learned about the investigation against him through the media.

He wrote on his Facebook page: "We have never committed any infringement. We have always fulfilled all our tax obligations, following the advices of our tax consultants who will take care of clarifying this situation."

Argentina's media also appeared puzzled by Wednesday's development, with the Clarin newspaper describing it as "unexpected news".

Barcelona FC have not commented on the allegations.

The investigation comes as the Spanish authorities step up their efforts to clamp down on tax fraud, as the government tries to balance its budget during a continuing economic crisis, the BBC's Tom Burridge in Madrid reports.

Mahesh Murthy

So this note is likely to piss off many of you, but still. Can someone tell me why exactly Jiah Khan's ex-boyfriend is being blamed for her suicide?

So it's the usual story. Boy meets girl, they fall in love, they are happy, then they break up. Then he sees someone else.

At which point over-wrought girl decides her life isn't worth living. Seriously - this is a 25-year old who co-starred with Aamir Khan in a hit film and then later thinks her life is value-less without the continuing attention of some unemployed star-kid?! How the heck was she brought up? What kind of foolish adult mind thinks that someone else's attention is so important that her own life pales in comparison? How dare her parents blame her ex for this ridiculous state of mind? Who gave her these values where "death before losing in love" is a virtue?

So she writes a latter saying she had an abortion when she got pregnant, presumably by him - again, no one told her about contraception? And even if they decided to forswear protection - it's his fault she got pregnant? Wasn't she equally part of it?

So yes, she had an abortion, she set her mind to have him, but he moved on after they mutually broke up - but she wanted him back, and he said no, so she took her life?

Of course we mourn for her.

But why would we - and the police - blame the idiot star kid who was her ex-boyfriend? I hear it's on the charge of abetting suicide. Really? You mean if two people are together, and one wants to marry the other, and the other refuses, and then the first one commits suicide, then the other has abetted it? What rot.

So now after seeing this news play out, we have a nation of unstable 25-year olds going around forcing their partners into matrimony at the gunpoint of "do it or I'll commit suicide and you'll go to jail like Aditya Pancholi's son"?

What about it being the other way around? Perhaps more like blackmail - "Marry me, or I'll commit suicide?" And would that not be equally valid a crime?

So what's a guy to do if he doesn't want to marry a girl? Or vice versa actually. Report to the cops when he's been proposed to? Take anticipatory bail before he says "No, I don't want to marry you"? Call the counselling lines so they make outbound calls to the partner in advance of him saying no? Or in this case, even involve a bigger star, Salman Khan, who oversees their apparently amicable separation? And even then go to jail after all these precautionary measures?

Look, there's no escaping the fact that a life lost is a terrible, terrible thing. But blaming the ex-boyfriend or ex-girlfriend for one's lack of motivation to live when a relationship breaks is not the other's fault. It's your own.

No one grows up with a right to be loved. It's a privilege you earn for yourself. It doesn't come naturally. You earn it. And very often, love comes. And love goes. And love comes back. And goes again. And so on.

And, yes, sorry to break it to you but there is no one-man-one-woman-walking-into-the-sunset-together-forever Mills & Boon bullshit that happens either. If your parents or your convent schools or some M&B you read or a chick flick or a YashRaj or KJo film told you that it is the way and it will happen to you - please understand that those are pretty unreliable sources. For starters, it didn't happen to the authors of such propaganda: the nuns and KJo are still single. The apparent importance of marriage is just propaganda - and you're better off not depending on it. If it happens, cool. And if it doesn't, that should be cool too.

Perhaps the best thing we can do as individuals and parents is tell the kids around that marriage isn't the ultimate goal. It isn't even an intermediate goal. Or even a tiny goal. Screw the TBZ ads and the whitening cream commercials. Ignore Chetan Bhagat and Shaadi.com. Marriage is downright unimportant in the overall course of things.

In India, you don't need to be married to have a child legally. Or even to inherit and pass on property. Marriage is just a social custom where a bunch of old people shower rice on your head and believe they're giving you their permission (or direction, in some cases) to sleep with someone. As you can imagine, it has little or no legal necessity or significance.

What is important is planning to live a full life for yourself, and working to make all your dreams come true - regardless of whether you have a partner with you for the course.

Sure, it's more fun when you have a lover around. But not having one around isn't a show-stopper. Life is compulsory. Marriage is an optional extra. Let's tell the kids that.

Oh, and while we're at it, can we please stop blaming that poor Pancholi kid for Jiah Khan's suicide? Let's stop the witch hunt. Get him out of jail.

And let's stop glorifying suicide in the name of unrequited love.

Teacher in Egypt Sentenced for 'Defaming' Islam

Christian fined beyond ability to pay; civil trial looms.
By Our Middle East Correspondent
CAIRO, Egypt, June 11, 2013 (Morning Star News) – A judge in Upper Egypt found a Christian teacher guilty of defaming Islam today and levied a massive fine against her after prohibiting her lawyers from presenting a single witness during the trial.

Dimyana Obeid Abd Al-Nour escaped jail time, but she was fined 100,000 Egyptian pounds (US$14,270), far beyond her ability to pay.

She is on the verge of a nervous breakdown, her father, Ebed Abd Al-Nour, told Morning Star News. He said his daughter did nothing wrong.

“I am very upset right now by the sentence,” he said. “My daughter is innocent and should not have been given such a sentence.”

He then became overcome with emotion and declined to comment further.

Al-Nour a 24-year-old, first-year teacher in Egypt, made less than US$300 a month before she lost her position in the wake of the accusations against her. Her family is poor, and she could be sent to jail for failure to pay a court-ordered fine if unable to find the money.

Muslims created a clamor in the courtroom that put intense pressure on the judge, said a human rights advocate who was surprised that the guilty verdict did not send her to prison.

“I personally was expecting a prison sentence, but thank God she was only given a fine,” said Mohammed Noubi, a human rights advocate with the Luxor office of the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR). “There was a lot of pressure and uproar inside the courtroom.”

On April 10, three elementary schoolchildren at Sheikh Sultan Primary School in the village of Al-Edisat, Luxor Province, along with their parents and some teachers, complained to the school administration that Al-Nour had made blasphemous comments while teaching. Two days earlier, while teaching a class about history and religion, she discussed pharaoh Amenhotep IV, later known as Akhenaten, who did away with all other Egyptian gods in favor of sun worship in ancient Egypt (see Morning Star News, May 15).

Al-Nour also reportedly expressed her admiration for the former head of the Coptic Orthodox Church, the late Pope Shenouda III, in class. In some versions of the alleged incident, she also made comparisons between Shenouda and Muhammad, the prophet of Islam. Three students said she made a gesture expressing disgust with Muhammad.

When the complaint was made, a group of head teachers and parents, known as the School Council, conducted an investigation into the allegations. They found there wasn’t any reliable evidence that Al-Nour had committed any offense, according to EIPR sources.

When the students were questioned, three of them said she had said or done something wrong. But the three students’ versions of what gesture Al-Nour allegedly made and what she allegedly said did not match up, according to EIPR. Also, the rest of the students in the class, 10 in all, said Al-Nour was blameless and never even mentioned the late pope or Muhammad.

A survey of the staff at the school revealed that she was widely respected by her colleagues, according to EIPR.

The School Council’s report was turned into the provincial governor’s office and to the legal department of the local office of the national Ministry of Education, which then conducted its own investigation; like the School Council, it found no crime had been committed. By chance, a school inspector happened to be monitoring the class Al-Nour was teaching but found nothing wrong with her instruction.

The case likely would have been dropped, but two attorneys representing the parents of one student went directly to the prosecutor’s office, obligating officials to conduct their own investigation. In what are known as “hisba cases,” Egyptian law allows citizens to file lawsuits against anyone who has transgressed the “exalted right of God.” Many blasphemy cases are filed in such a manner.

In court, Al-Nour’s lawyers were prepared to bring three crucial witnesses, including Mustafa Mikki, principal of the school. In an interview with the Coptic weekly Al-Watani, Mikki, a Muslim, said that those who brought the charges against Al-Nour were “fanatics.”

He also confirmed that none of the stories of the three children who accused Al-Nour matched. But the judge in Al-Nour’s case, Muhammad Al-Tamawy, would not let Mikki or anyone else testify on her behalf.

Noubi, who has helped Al-Nour’s legal team for EIPR, said that in addition to the fine, Al-Nour has now been referred to a civil court, as one of the complaining parents has filed a lawsuit against her. In order for damages to be awarded in the civil case, Al-Nour first must have been convicted of a crime. It is unknown how much money is sought in the civil case.

Al-Nour, who has attended only one of her hearings, remains in hiding. According to EIPR, the courtroom and surrounding area was swarming with conservative Muslims protesting against her during the hearing she attended.

Since then, she has been too sick to attend any of the hearings, according to human rights activists and her family. Al-Nour was arrested and held for two days, until her family was able to post bail with the help from the church.

Noubi said her lawyers plan to appeal.

The accusations against Al-Nour reflect a growing trend in Egypt of disproportionate use of the nation’s blasphemy statutes against members of Egypt’s Christian minority since the Muslim Brotherhood’s Mohamed Morsi came into power in June 2012, according to human rights advocates.

I signed on with Ava because I love that the company's mission is to get the news out there about the toxins found in the everyday products we think are safe and pure and to change chemical policy in this country, and I wanted to play a part in that. But, I never dreamed that I would end up being blessed with this success and find such a perfect fit to fulfill my own passions. My tears are flowing today. My heart is so full.

Pompous ass!! see the difference b/w a jack ass like u and a dignified celeb!

Which medium does he prefer, now that he is playing the lead on a major TV show? “Just a few days ago, I rejected a horror film to be able to concentrate on Chhanchhan,” he states proudly.

I don’t think there is any barrier. Also, I had earlier rejected a show called Kaisa Yeh Pyar Hai. I have been refusing shows over the last three years.”

But Sanaya being a senior in the acting department, he will learn from her, won’t he? “Learning is a process. You can even learn things from a child,” quips Farhan, leaving a whiff of rivalry in the air. (Sanaya took to this fact very well though, just like she did when a journalist asked her if Chhanchhan was her first show – she replied in a very dignified manner that she was four shows old.)

Messi facing 6 years imprisonment

Barcelona star Lionel Messi has been
rocked by accusations of tax evasion,
totalling over €4 million (£3.3m)
between 2006 and 2009.

The Spanish tax authorities are
investigating claims that the four-time
Ballon d’Or winner and his father, Jorge
Horacio, have avoided paying the
charges due from sales of the 25-year-
old's image rights by operating through companies based outside of
the country.

A complaint, signed by prosecutor
Raquel Amado, was filed with the
courthouse in the Gava district of
Barcelona on Wednesday. Messi moved quickly to deny the claims,
and in a statement released via his
official Facebook account, he revealed
he had only been made aware of the
developments through media channels
and not official sources. He said:

"We have learned through the
media about the claim filed by the
Spanish tax authorities. "We are surprised about this news,
because we have not committed any
infringement. We have always fulfilled
all of our tax obligations, following the
advice of our tax consultants, who will
take care of clarifying this situation." Under Spanish law,

Messi could face a
maximum penalty of six years in prison
if found guilty.

Combining fiction with facts drawn from informal conversations with people who knew the accused, local and national news reports, youtube clips and other on-line websites, the tragedy begins with an up close and personal look into the mind of Tone and ends with a community having its say.

Lionel Messi stunned by tax fraud claims

The Barcelona star, along with father Jorge, has been accused of evading tax charges over a three-year period and is allegedto owe in the region of €4 million

Barcelona star Lionel Messi has been rocked by accusations of tax evasion, totalling over €4 million between 2006 and 2009.

The Spanish tax authorities are investigating claims that the four-time Ballon d’Or winner and his father, Jorge Horacio, have avoided paying the charges due from sales of the 25-year-old's image rights by operating through companies based outside of the country.A complaint, signed by prosecutor Raquel Amado, was filed with the courthouse in the Gava district of Barcelona on Wednesday. Messi moved quickly to deny the claims, and in a statement released via his official Facebook account, he revealed he had only been made aware of the developments through media channels and not official sources.

He said:"We have learned through the media about the claim filed by the Spanish tax authorities.
"We are surprised about this news, because we have not
committed any infringement. We have always fulfilled all of our tax obligations, following the advice of our tax consultants, who will take care of clarifying this situation.”
Under Spanish law, Messi could face a maximum penalty of six years in prison if found guilty

Soccer star Lionel Messi has denied
allegations of wrongdoing after being
accused of defrauding the Spanish
authorities of over $5 million. According to court papers seen by
CNN, prosecutors say the Barcelona
player and his father Jorge Horacio are
suspected of filing fraudulent tax
returns between 2006-2009. The four-time World Player of the Year,
who is away on international duty with
Argentina, took to Facebook
Wednesday to offer a firm rebuttal of
the accusation. "We have just known through the
media about the claim filed by the
Spanish tax authorities," read a
statement in Spanish and English. "We are surprised about the news,
because we have never committed any
infringement. "We have always fulfilled all our tax
obligations, following the advice of our
tax consultants, who will take care of
clarifying this situation." According to the papers filed by the
prosecutor, Raquel Amado in Gava, the
seaside resort close to Barcelona
where Messi lives, it is alleged that they
tried to avoid paying taxes in Spain by
selling the player's image rights through overseas companies. Messi, who will turn 26 later this
month, is one of the world's highest-
paid athletes according to Forbes
Magazine. Read: Woods tops highest-paid athlete
list He has a yearly salary from Barcelona
of just over $20 million plus around
$21 million in endorsements from
several lucrative sponsors including
Adidas and PepsiCo, putting him 10th
on Forbes' list.
